2010 Bonfire

Tioughnioga Winter Carnival Bon Fire Speech

By: Dan Degear, DeRuyter Town Supervisor
Tonight, we are gathered together to honor the victims of the earthquake that devastated an already impoverished nation of Haiti.  Many thousands of people have lost their lives, and many thousands are still in grave danger.  Our hearts go out to these people and their families.DeRuyter has three heroes tonight - doing what they can to comfort the people of Haiti.  Linda Springer, Andy Clendenning, and Pastor Vern Groves traveled to Haiti to help an orphanage and to repair a church roof, or so they thought.  There was a greater purpose for their trip; their kindness and strength are certainly being put to good use.  We are truly blessed to call these wonderful people our friends, we pray for their safe return to their families.Tonight, we are accepting donations for the people of Haiti.  There are many organizations currently soliciting donations. This fund, collected tonight, will be donated in the way the Vern, Linda, and Andy feel is the most appropriate.  The bucket for donations will also be inside the gymnasium for the rest of the evening. Now, as we dedicate this event in memory of those whose lives have been lost, we also think of the all the many people who have fallen victim to this earthquake.  At this time, we will observe a moment of silence.Thank you.   I invite you all to stay and enjoy this bon fire.  Fire symbolizes the light of the world.  As found in Matthew 5:14-16; You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do people light a candle and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.    Thank you.
