Here you will find a listing of cemeteries located in the Town of DeRuyter (contributed by David & Joan Ball, Tromptown Historical Society).  The directions all begin in the Village of DeRuyter, at the intersection of NYS Route 13 (Albany Street becomes Crumb Hill Road east of the village) and South Hill Road.  NYS Route 13 runs in a southwesterly direction through the Town of DeRuyter to the Village where it turns to a westerly direction.  All cemetery locations except McClellan and Lewis are clearly marked on the Highway Map of Madison County.

Burdick Family Cemetery

1 East Lake Road: go north on NYS Route 13 for 1.7 mi.  Turn left on East Lake Road (CR 57) and continue north for 1.1 mi.  The cemetery is on the right side of the road, located exactly 0.2 mi. south of the next intersection at South Lake Road.  This is an abandoned private cemetery.

3 Cemetery Street: west on NYS Route 13 (Cortland Street) to Cemetery Street.  Turn left on Cemetery Street for 0.2 mi. to cemetery on the left (east) side of the road.  This is an active, incorporated cemetery maintained by the DeRuyter Rural Cemetery Association.  Burials began in 1816.

McClellan:  McClellan Road.  From the village line on Crumb Hill Road, travel east 1.8 mi.  Go left (north) on McClellan Road for 0.1 mi. to hedgerow on the right (east) in the vicinity of the apple tree.  Not visible for over 50 years and exact location unknown.  Thought to be a Quaker burying ground with unmarked burials.

Quaker Basin Cemetery

5 Quaker Basin:  Crumb Hill Road.  Go east on Albany Street (becomes Crumb Hill Road) for 1.4 mi.  The cemetery is on the left (south) side, opposite Wood Road.  This is an active cemetery with occasional new burials.  The earliest burial was in 1846.  Maintained by the Quaker Basin Cemetery Community Committee.

Smith (Merchant) Cemetery

7 South Lake Road:  Go north on NY State Route 13 for 0.3 mi.  Turn left on Middle Lake Road (CR-55).  Go 2.3 mi. to South Lake Road.  Cemetery is on the left side of the intersection of Middle Lake Road and South Lake Road in a grove of pine trees.  This cemetery is an abandoned private cemetery, also know as Merchant Cemtery with burials c. 1807 - 1880.

Crumb Hill Cemetery

2 Mariposa Road: go east on Albany Street (becomes Crumb Hill Road at the village line) for 2.1 mi. to Y-intersection.  Bear right, up the hill for 1.1 mi. to Mariposa Road (the road to South Otselic).  Turn on Mariposa Road and travel 0.15 mi. to the cemetery on the left.  The cemetery is next to the road but easy to miss.  This is an abandoned private cemetery with burials from 1816 - 1916.

Hunt (Coon or Wells) Cemetery

4 Hunt Road: go north on NY State Route 13 for 2.8 mi. Turn left (west) on Hunt Road (CR-56) for 0.3 mi. to cemetery on the right (north) side of road.  This is an abandoned private cemetery.  It is also known as the Coon Cemetery and the Wells Cemetery and has burials dating from 1817 - 1903.

Lewis:  Historical reference states this burying ground is located at Lewis Corners, 2 miles north of DeRuyter at the intersection of NY State Route 13 and Carey (Gulf) Road.  An earlier cemetery census notes three burials of the William Carpenter family, one in 1826 and two in 1840.  The exact location is unknown.

Old Burying Ground

6 Old Burying Ground:  Albany Street.  Go east on Albany Street.  Cemetery is just beyond the village limit on the right (south).  This is an abandoned private cemetery with burials from 1811 - 1880.

Sheds Cemetery

8 Sheds Cemetery:  NY State Route 80.  Go north on NY State Route 13 for 5.0 mi. to the hamlet of Sheds.  Turn right (east) on NY State Route 80 and go 0.1 mi. to the cemetery on the right (south) side of the road.  This is an active cemetery with burials beginning c.1807 and maintained by the Sheds Cemetery Association.

Union Cemetery

9 Utica Street:  In the village, go north on NY State Route 13 (Utica Street).  The cemetery is just beyond Mechanic Street, in back of the former Seventh Day Baptist Church.  This is an abandoned community cemetery.
